UV Scorpion Detection

Ultraviolet Scorpion Lights

We have a number of customers across the world who buy our torches specifically for scorpion detection. Stories of people being viciously stung as a result of putting a foot into a shoe where a scorpion might be hiding are rare but this situation does occur. Scorpions are indigenous to many African and Southern European countries and checking for them may save you an incredible amount of pain and trouble!

We have a range of ultra violet torches in stock but for scorpion detection we would strongly recommend our 100 LED, 390 nanometre torch available here

Scorpions are known to glow when exposed to certain wavelengths of ultraviolet light such as that produced by a black light, due to the presence of fluorescent chemicals in the cuticle. One fluorescent component is now known to be beta-carboline. A handheld UV Torch has long been a standard tool for nocturnal field surveys of these creatures. Fluorescence occurs as a result of sclerotization and increases in intensity with each successive instar. This fluorescence may have an active role in scorpion light detection.
